When will Hou Yifan Break 2700?

Hou has been tearing up at Wijk Aan Zee, and seems destined to break 2700. On the live ratings, she just broke 2682! Does anyone have any predictions about when she'll break the Super GM barrier?  Does anyone think she won't make it?

Take a look at her game against Navara:

I don't doubt she'll crack 2700. I predict it hits in 2016. Cool

Oh she will break 2700, her peak was 2687 on live, but 2700 is just a top 50 player these days, if she could ever get to top ten in world ranking like Judith, that will be something else.  I do not believe she will ever get that high.

I like her playing style, very sharp and sound; I hope she goes to 2700 elo.

I would love to see the Men's and Women's Chess Champions compete on a consistent basis!

Why? If it was not Hou any other female world champ would get completely destroyed by the men's champion, we are talking about 8-2 9-1 type spankings.

Very strong indeed. Hou Yifan is a cool 100 rating points over Koneru, Women's world #2. Cool

Hou's form has dipped in the past three years but this is for entirely understandable reasons. Unlike many GMs who attend university, Hou has taken her studies very seriously and has been learning English as well - quite a payload.

Nevertheless, on the evidence of what we've seen of her so far at Wijk aan Zee (her game against Navara displayed impressive precision) she's likely to break 2700 sooner rather than later.

One weakness though is worth mentioning, by comparison to the elite GMs her openings lack punch; on the other hand, she defends with a cool head and has always been a very principled player - not surprising for someone who cites Fischer as a role model.

Her ending is not 2700 level. She is strong in middle game but weak in both opening and endings. Judith was weaker than her rating at endings as well.

I think she makes it in 2016 Laughing I think the challenge may be the lack of super-tournament invitations. It's hard to scale the ratings summit playing outside of the major invitationals.

^True true.  Actually, a great call by Wijk Aan Zee to invite her last year. Her play proved them right!

She is below 2650 at the moment...

"I think the challenge may be the lack of super-tournament invitations"

To be fair, no other player her level is close to get as many top tournament invitations as she does. This year she has played Tata A, Gashimov Memorial, the Danzhou tournament, last year she also played Tata A, as well as Dortmund, and she has played a lot of strong opens lately like Isle of Man and Qatar Masters, apart from participating in last year's World Cup etc. And still she is 2643 at the moment. A great player in every way, but her 50 points lower rating 7 1/2 years ago was more amazing than the one of today. It still remains to be seen how much further she can progress, but 2700 isn't a given going by her development the last years.

Hou's current 2634 rating is more than 100 Elo below Polgar's peak rating, and below her own rating from March 2012. Even though she of course is an amazing chess player I think it's time to realise that she never will be comparable to Polgar. It's not as if Hou is too old to improve or something like that, she will only be 23 in February. But she is no late bloomer like Aronian, she got an extremely high rating very early in her career, and has not given the impression lately that some qualitative jump is on the cards. It more looks like stabilising around 2625-50 than passing 2700 at the moment.
