Huh...?

I guess the answer is : nowhere.

And if by chance you found a place where you can bet money (be paid for playing just is a wonderland dream), it would be full of players much, much better than you and me, so you could only lose money.

This being said, I admit I don't really know...

I think if you want to make money online you have to switch to poker.
unless you are famous I guess noone will sponsor you playing chess.

Guys, I just bought a chess program, and after beating some people on my X-box I thought up a genius idea (I can't tell you the specifics, but it's really clever).  Anyway what I need to know now is where I can play online for money.  Thanks.

Well, his profile does say that he is an excellent player.

He also likes listening to hip pops. Sounds painful.

If you really want to make lots of money you will need to play over the board. My rating is only about 1850 or soCry and in a good year I can make dozensMoney Mouth of dollars in over the board tournaments.Smile

Nope not online.  The only places you are going to make money is in a real live OTB tournament and most of the time the prize money isn't all that great, and if it is, you likely spent a good deal of money for the hotel/travel/EF costs that you may break even.

Like bobbyDK said, I would look into other avenues to make a quick buck, like poker.  Chess being what it is, it is too easy for someone to cheat their way online using a chess engine, thus the main reason no one online plays chess for money.

Wouldn't you think it would be filled with really nicely tuned chess-engines?

Huh ? (bis)

Depends on the tournaments you pick... In Paris (and nearby region), you won't get 1st prize in a decent tournament <2100 (FIDE). "Decent tournament" meaning practically anything with prices in money that are more than the inscription refund.

As for "excellent player"... With all due respect, I will rather trust his live chess rating 300 points under mine that what is written on a profile. Anyone is "excellent" compared to the average neighbour (=OTB non-club partner) in US and Europe when he is over 1500.

@bobbyDK ("Switch to poker if you want to make money") : it's an easier way to make money, sure, but a much easier one to lose some also.

What?  You mean you thought of it too?  Ok keep it a secret though... I need to find those sites where a guy with an engine can win the big money before word gets out that there are programs that play chess well.

My friend got one on his phone, but I was smart and invested $60 in Rybka.  If I can't win at least that much then I won't even break even.  (By the way I tested it and Rybka is better than the phone application so I should do really well).

There are a few site where you can play for tickets (the websites currency) which can then be exchanged for real cash. Google it.

Better dust off your engine.

I guess if GM played on sites where you could win money I guess most GM would be paranoid and play opening/position that are not suited for engines thus still win.

That's just wrong. Maybe GM would play with their own engines, and then win against patzers using with Fritz 1000.0, but human GM vs. portable computer with decent softwre is a lost fight. Now they perform at 3000+...

There is no need of things such as "positional thinking" when the computer sees 50 moves ahead.

I've found the best way to make money is to get a job.

There is website where betting via online tournaments is allowed.  You keep a balance on the site with your membership and when you win the credits which can be exchanged for cash can be taken out.  I will not mention the site, Im sure if you determined enough you'll find it.  The site does however allow the use of chess engines in the tournaments. Some just last few weeks came here upset he lost money against someone on the site obviously using an engine.  Good Luck!

Chess is a game, not gambling.
