India has the strongest case. China is a possibility, however. Rome and Greece are out of the question: they learned chess from Muslims in the ninth century.
Hindu INDIA - I thought that was a closed case?
One of the greatest things that India has conferred upon the world (apart from Lamb Tikka Masala, mango chutney and paratha ;).
no man, it has it's origination in INDIA.. dont you know its history?

Geometry, for example, came from Euclid, who lived in the Greek city of Alexandria, Egypt.
India though early game variants have been found in the Mseopotamia, Egypt, and China. India clearly has the earliest recognizable chess games though the Europeans added Castling, two square pawn moves, and the powerfull queen moves.

not sure if you guys know this, but americans invented india as well. so that's that.
