Where do websites get chess databases from?

Other than TWIC and chessbase (which are for personal use), how do other sites (like chess.com, 365chess, etc) get their chess databases? Do they just compile pgns from tournaments from around the world? Do most have some kind of deal set up with TWIC? How does 365chess.com get so many games from amateurs?

Any thoughts?

Also interested in this topic. Are game collections subject to any sort of copyright?

Also interested.

Yes, game collections are subject to copyright. The game scores themselves are not. Annotations are. Collections are. It's all a little strange, but it makes sense to me.

Oh, and I think copyright is per-country, but I'm not sure.

And usually, some attorney-types end up commenting on this sort of thing as well. Whereas me, I just like to stay at Holiday Inn Expresses.

I'm not so sure - the moves of the game can't really be copyrighted, but obviously any annotations can be.
