Where do you blunder more often? In 2D or 3D (real) chess?

noooooooo

it's the board's fault!

I agree with the sentiment Diakonia but I think what happens in crazy time scrambles makes the game somewhat farcical. If we're talking top level play deciding the world blitz or heaven forbid the classical world championship comes down to a single armageddon game (which is a stupid possibility IMO) I would much rather the players sat opposite each other at a screen so the factor of knocking pieces about and bashing the clock is removed.

I try and play OTB when possible. It is a whole different feeling when a board is set up in front. Alas, more blunders 2d I think.

TRextastic

I prefer OTB chess. I like sitting across from an actual opponent. I also don't make blunders because of mouse slips or lose time on trying to get a buggy piece to move on a tiny screen.

But I generally blunder more in OTB than online, if I haven't played on a 3D board in awhile. I think slightly different spatial reasoning is involved. OTB feels more like my side vs his side. Whereas online feels more like a puzzle.

You also dont have to worry about your opponent trying to disconnect, or droppinig a piece, and sitting there for 30-60 minutes letting the clock run out.

If you play 2D chess in chess.com V2 and 3D chess in chess.com V3, that has been shown to reduce blunders by 17%.

Ok,  but then with online chess you don't have to worry about your opponent stabbing you in the face xD

Really? That's interesting... because 3D chess on internet is 'the worst' for me. Can't explain,

but don't like it in general...

@Eseles

I hope you don't speak from personal experience, cause I'd like to visit a chess club here in the near... :-)

In case chess is too dangerous, I should maybe visit a boxing club... :-D

Either I'm just joking, or you should go to a chess club wearing a full body armor xD

But if you visit a boxing club and a chess club, then you might be ready for Chess-boxing! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_boxing

...and never heard about Chess boxing... thank you for the link... - it is not an option for me... happy.png

urk
I don't think I notice a difference.
At any rate, after all the online chess I've been playing recently it feels good to be using real pieces in a "3D" game.
The_Phenominal

i was very bad player on 2d until i joined chess.com now i dont have chess friends so no on the board games. OTB games are little difficult because of adjustment but OTB is beautiful.

I found the transition from 2D (online) to 3D (OTB) very difficult. Things I'd see instantly online I simply wouldn't see at all over-the-board and would consequently blunder often. To compensate for this about 3 months ago I set my chess.com settings to tournament board (green & white) and 3D Staunton pieces (essentially to try to replicate OTB play online). For the first month I hated it, but now it seems totally natural and my OTB visualisation has improved a lot (less blunders).

EndgameEnthusiast2357

It takes like 10 min just to scan a whole 8x8x8 cubic 3d board

LouStule
@dans. I tried that too but gave up because I too hated it at first. Should I give it another try?
dansgotabig1

@Lou It’s definitely worked for me. As I said, for a month I too really, really hated it as I was so used to 2D  but now it seems completely normal. I tried the 2D pieces a couple of weeks ago and didn’t like it at all. 100% certain it’s improved my OTB visualisation. Give it a go!

MickinMD

It depends on which one I've spent the most time lately.  With the Internet, it's been 2D mostly for me and when I play on a real board I overlook what's going on with Q's and B's on the diagonals more often than in 2D.

GM_Con

I definitely blunder more online in 2d
