Not just to avoid the Fools Mate, but to avoid a plague of problems you should avoid positions where the opponent's Queen can line up on the same file, rank, or diagonal as your King. This sometimes applies to Rooks and Bishops as well. Martin Weteschnik, in his great book Chess Tactics from Scratch, talks about how easy it sometimes is to set up pins, discovered attacks, etc. when such an alignment exists.
