Where to start?

So I'm trying to sink my teeth in and get better at chess, but I'm clueless as to where to start.  I picked up Chessmaster 11: Grandmaster edition and have been working with the tutorials, which seem decent enough, but openings are constantly referenced as if I should already know them.

I find this problem in books as well.  Many topics are discussed casually as if I should already be in the know.  The books I've picked up so far are:

How to be a Winner at Chess by Fred Reinfeld (Some nice tips here, but extremely light on content)

Modern Chess Strategy by Ludek Pachman (Suffers from problem mentioned above)

Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy (Again, clearly not written with novices in mind)

So should I get a book on openings to familiarize myself with them?

GM Yasser Seirawan has written a series of books... Winning Chess Tactics, Winning Chess Strategy... that are aimed at the novice player who wants to improve.
