Chess is a CEREBRAL "sport"...

Not this again

The fact is it has long been established as a sport. No one's opinion to the contrary changes the fact.

Jalex13
That’s never been long established, but okay.

This is the third thread you claim the same thing, and also the third time that noone cares.

Yes, it certainly has or I wouldn't have said it.

In fact, the IOC has recognzized it as a sport dating back to just after the turn of the millenium.

I also proved it a sport years ago using argument by definition. Additionally, hundreds of countries recognize chess is a sport.

Someone's opinion had nothing to do with the fact it was a sport and no one's opinion has anything to do with the fact it's still a sport today.

Why do you always ask this question?

Jalex13
Just because you said something doesn’t make it true. That logic makes absolutely no sense.
Jalex13
Oh, forgive me. I didn’t see the second half of your post. The IOC doesn’t make the rules unfortunately. Them recognizing chess as a sport doesn’t quite change anything.

Just because something may be physically exerting doesn't make it a sport lol. If you played a long game of poker with your entire life savings, you would probably sweat a lot and physically exert yourself, but it's still not a sport LOL. It's not actually physical activity

I didn't say because I said something made it true, I said if it wasn't a fact, that I wouldn't have said it. Your fallacy is a strawman fallacy. My proven assertion made perfect sense whether or not you agree.

“The IOC says it’s a sport”

Then it must be!

It's your fact. It isn't a fact for me though.

The IOC is an interested party and therefore it's right to be very sceptical.

Not true. Unlike your opinion which can be yours and subjective, the objective facts belong to everyone and are not subject to anyone's opinion. If it is your aim to oppose facts, it's not a position to brag about.

Jalex13
Facts are based on evidence. Perhaps you missed that.

Whether or not chess is a sport is certainly subjective, and the purpose of this thread is to not actually find a solution to the question - but to express that the question itself honestly has no solution.

Organizations can define and redefine all they like - but that only changes the definition in their circle of influence.  It does not change it for everyone.

Let's suppose the United States government made an official decree naming chess a sport.  Does that make it a sport?  Sure - for those that believe in the intellectual authority of the United States government.  I don't.  I will maintain my own definition of sport and how chess is relative to it regardless of any organization's position.

I have refuted many a definition of Merriam-Webster strictly because of the definition being illogical.  Being that US English is based primarily on usage and not some logical equation, some definitions are just - stupid, and no one can change my personal definition outside of involuntary conditioning.

So again, outside of funding and/or politics, whether or not chess is a sport is irrelevant.

For some?  Sure.  Others?  No.

Are spelling bees sports? I’ve been wondering for some time now.
