I would recommend John Nunn's book Understanding Chess Move by Move as a more modern book. It is a large format paperback from Gambit publishers! You may also want to check out Modern Instructive Chess Masterpieces Igor Stahl by Gambit also. These are two fine bookends!

Would you still reccommend this book to a lower ranked player, say 800-1200?

I would recommend both. They are clearly written with many diagrams and you should if you put in the effort to play along with a real board gain real insight and understanding!

I learned from this book maybe 35+ years ago. I still think very highly of it. Not only does it help you move by move, but it also teaches you to plan and develop stragedy. A great classic I hope is still used after 100 years.

I think John Nunn's book supercedes the older Logical Chess Move by Move by Chernov. The format is bigger, with the newer E4 D4 notation. The format is larger, easier to read and frankly a better recommendation to newer players!
