Hi guys

As an intermediate player which is the move u prefer more e4 or d4

Strangemover

Skill level is unimportant in deciding which opening move you prefer I think. It's more about the sort of positions you find yourself in 15 or 20 moves into the game and whether you understand and enjoy positions that arise from eg Ruy Lopez, Sicilians, French vs Slav, Kings Indian, Gruenfeld. If you are not sure you should try both. Play only 1.e4 for a week, then only 1.d4 for a week and compare the experience.

DrSpudnik

That's pretty good advice.

Now comes the bad advice....

I prefer d4 in general. Although when I find that I'm black, I don't mind playing against e4 because I generally respond with c5, as I like the Sicilian positions.

I like King's Indian Defence for d4.

I think 1 e4 is more comfortable for most club-rated and lower players but if you play the London System, 1 d4 2 Nf3 and 3 Bf4 you are basically playing the Slav or Caro-Kann Defense, favorites of many players club-level players, in reverse with the advantage of the first move.

As Strangemover said, it depends on the positions you get yourself in and how well you understand what you can do with them.

RathminesRampager

Club players should prefer 1.e4 as this leads to a more direct style of play. More advanced players may prefer 1.d4 which usually leads to a slower, more positional game.

e4 is my choice hence all the beginners learned from me :)
As white e4 is default and as black I'll play what white starts!

Thanks guys for your lovely comments

I posted this in another thread, but the thread has been deleted.

As I am very unsure in openings I always open e4 against someone who I think is a better player or has a higher rating. But I actually hate it. When it evolves slowly it's very boring and It takes a long time to form a plan. When it evolves quickly I find the 3 pawns on the king side very vulnerable, especially f2. Moreover I disagree with RathminesRampager. I think e4 leads to a rather static position for white wherein the white pieces are liable to obstruct one another's movements. D4 in my (small) experience is more dynamic. Maybe positional, but less static than E4.

Edit - also with E4 I find it very hard to form a plan when all the pieces are in place. It must be my lack of strategical or tactical knowledge.

I play d4 when white,but playing black against e4,I play c5.

Your only valid goal in the opening should be to reach a middle-game position in which you feel comfortable. Nothing else matters at your level.

my level isn't so bad

I was speaking to the OP. Although the same advice could be offered to a 2000 player.
