Israel is in the top 3 even though it is a much smaller country than USSR, China and USA.

I think Jews have the greatest intellect per capita.

The Jewish contribution to human progress has been enormous and VASTLY out of proportion to their actual numbers. They are a constant source of both amazement and inspiration.

"While Jews are approximately 0.25% of the world's population, Jews make up approximately 22% of all Nobel Prize laureates worldwide." [!!] [In contrast, for example, from a population 117 times larger than the global Jewish one, the Islamic world can boast a mere 9 Nobel Laureates!]

Concerning Israel: (merely a sample of many quotable facts)

"Israel is one of the tiniest nations on the face of the earth...only about 8,000 sq. miles, 2½ times the size of Rhode Island and only slightly larger than the Canary Islands!"

YET:

- Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a  large margin - 109 per 10,000 people -- as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.

- Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds right behind the  US.

- Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East.

- Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate [Muslim] neighbors combined. [Including oil-rich Arab nations. This is the most astonishing statistic!!]

- Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.

- Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books.

- 80% of biotechnology in the ENTIRE world comes from Israel. [!!]

- Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world (apart from Silicon  Valley).

- Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the  workforce, with 145 per 10,000...

And yet many would see this tiny but super-advanced nation eradicated (for doing things that also many other countries have done). That would be a disservice to all mankind.

And you have forgotten chess!!! I will give you the number of famous jewish players I know

Wilhelm Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, Akiba Rubinstein, Mikhail Botvinnik, Samuel Reshevsky, Salomon Flohr, David Bronstein, Mikhail Tal, Lazslo Szabo, Miguel Najdorf, Leonid Stein, Richard Reti, Rudolf Spielmann, Savielly Tartakower, Aron Nimzovich, Boris Gelfand,

Don't forget Kasparov.

Well, he's half Jewish. If you include him, then you have to include Fischer also.

Fischers mom and dad where both Jewish, I´d say that makes him pretty Jewish, but he didn't agree on that. Laughing

What if that FIDE table up above took population size into consideration, i.e., country population per titled player?

Combining Dustin's post above with population data, Russia actually ends up looking best among the 10 largest countries (of course, they ran a national chess factory back in the day), China and India fall a bit. (Worldwide average is 574,000 earth inhabitants per titled player, just a bit fewer than the US.)

Some smaller countries do quite well. Didn't do them all, but Greece and Sweden come in way ahead of the US on this statistic, with 115k and 74k citizens per titled player, respectively. Undoubtedly, there are others.

Country Citizens per titled player (in 000s)

Russia 73 United States 581 Brazil 1,599 Bangladesh 6,142 India 6,273 Japan 7,488 China 13,435 Nigeria 13,828 Indonesia No data Pakistan No data

Of course, if we calculated GMs per square kilometer (look up country land area stats), Russia plunges downwards fast! (Tongue firmly in cheek.)

What about Serbia?!

This question is a joke. The only spots being discussed are 2 and on since Russia rules.

The best chessplayers per capita are found in Antarctica and pound for pound the most dangerous animal alive is the amoeba.

Russia is Hertz (No. 1). The rest of the World is Avis (no. 2). Consolation: "We try harder."

It may seem like a stupid question but no one can ignore the stats.

Avatar of idigbuffy

No doubt it is Russia as the stats point out but any predictions if this will change in 20 years? I would guess that both China and India will make great strides and to a lesser degree the United States. When I was growing up I never heard of chess being taught in the public school system nor there being scholarships being offered on the basis of chess strength. I think in the USA chess is slowly gaining more public acceptance although it stills have a ways to go. What the usa needs is a chess player with Bobby Fischer chess strength and Boris Spassky personality!

A nation will only produce a lot of world class players in a certain sport when that sport has become an integral part of the nation's culture. For instance is it unlikely that the US will ever produce a better rugby or cricket team than some commonwealth countries (like South Africa, Australia etc). Chess may not be a cultural sport in China but board games certainly is and chess will easily catch on. However in the US the favourite sports are certainly not mind-games and it will take a huge revolution to change that. However, even if chess is not an integral part of a culture, there may still be individuals that become world champions - but I am talking about quantity really (several world class players in one country).

Well... I feel that this question is unnessecary. It just matters how many titled chess players are there in total to show how greatly the game of chess is improving around the world. Smile

But the countries that make the greatest chess players are mostly the rich ones like USA, Russia, Israel and other European Countries. But for the moderate countries like mine (India) 70% of the population is poor and cant afford a newspaper to find out whether chess exists or not :( But if trained we have the potential to have the most number of grandmasters in the world! Go Vishwanathan Anand!!!!!!!

People here are saying that "Russians" are the best at Chess, but the fact is that most of the best players in Russia have always been Jewish.  Ethnic Russians are not the best at Chess, but you can say that Russian Jews are the best at Chess.  The following Wiki article provides the name of many notable Jewish Chess players, you will see a lot of Russian born Jews on the list.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Jewish_chess_players

I think one sentence in the above Wiki article sums it up best, and ends the argument as to which nation has the best Chess players.  The second paragraph in the Wiki article begins by stating that "Although making up less than 0.2% of the world's population, of the first 13 undisputed world champions, over 50% were Jewish, including the first two."
