Standard is my favorite. I don't play bullet(can't think that fast), and blitz for me, is to enhance drug abuseLaughing

Blitz is my slow thinking game, bullet is my drug. I prefer corrspondence (aka Online chess, turn-based, ...) because it is a search for truth.

Online I like games from 1,0 to 5,0 ... a small increment is fine too.

I find it frustrating to play drunk online because I can't concentrate as well Tongue out

The funny thing about chess.com live chess is if your opponent lags, your 2/0 game can become more like a 3/0 game etc.  This makes it hard to get a feel for the tempo of the game and you have to literally look at your clock.

longer games are clearly better, or world championships would be played using 5-minutes on the clock.  haha.

I, like waffllemaster, enjoy games from 1-5 minutes with no increments. In fact, I find that 5 minutes is way too slow for me. I even make my decisions for online games in 2 seconds or less.

Standard

Avatar of stocke

bullet- too fast, you can't finish a game

blitz- PERFECT!!! You can finish a game but still have the time factor influencing play

standard- too slow for me

correspondence- Also awesome for when you don't have time to play a whole lot

I love to play chess in general. I think standard is probably the best because it gives you time to think but blitz is satisfying because you can play so many games in so little time. Bullet is a little too quick, you don't even have to make logical moves, just don't get checkmated before your oponent runs out of time=win.

I am afraid of correspondance because it takes so long and I fear that the opponent will use a computer program or a book to play for them.

In higher levels you do have to play logically for bullet chess, but also quickly. I play all of my online games like a bullet chess game, and my rating for online is around 1450(not great but good enough), so I would say that it does require logical thinking... until the endgame.

At the club I like 10,0 to 15,5.  G/20 seems too long for the fact you can't get very many games in.

Tournament I like at least 60,15.  If it's faster than that I'll look for a different tourney :)

Yeah, bullet chess is a different animal really... the clock plays a big role in evaluating the position so the initiative becomes incredibly valuable.  Similarly, advantages linked to favorable endgames sharply drop in value like adude23 mentions.

Skills like pre-moving and zwischenzug moves (including sacrificial checks to burn time) all but replace endgame skills in bullet.  Maybe highly practiced players can blitz 40 moves of a winning endgame on top of the first 30 moves, but I certainly don't have that kind of technique.

I prefer standard when I play against someone stronger than me or at my level so I've got enough time to think at all of the moves and analyze it mentally, in case of someone weaker I love blitz and bullet, due to the fact that I win easilly so I don't want to waste my time.

If I have enough time to play, I prefer standard by far ... my favorite chess "discipline" in general is long OTB tournament play, which is also where I have my best rating. Blitz is too fast for me, either I lose on time or I blunder pieces. I'm able to play a decent game from 7-8 minutes upward, 10 is better ... 5 or below is really difficult for me. I don't take bullet too serious, I play it but just for improving my horrible blitz skills (after a few 1 or 2 minute games 5 minutes seem much longer :)

I'm used to standard, find blitz to be a fun ride and bullet defeats the purpose of the game to me.  Of course, in time all things change.  I maybe a bullet freak before you know it.

Last night was first time playing "fast" bullet in some time... I've played some 2/0 games here, but at least one I timed at lasting just over 5 minutes if you catch my drift Tongue out

And I didn't do very well.  I forgot how much had to do with mouse skills and getting my brain into "bullet mode" so to speak.  It sure felt different form "real" or standard chess.  My super fast ending skills aren't as sharp (pre-move like crazy when you're both under 10 seconds) and it cost me a few games I was otherwise overwhelmingly winning.

I think I've lost at least 100 points worth of bullet strength on that site just from not being fast enough Tongue out  It was frustrating.
