Which time controls do you prefer?

Hi just a general question about time controls.  I guess we all know blitz is kind of the McDonalds of chess - quick and dirty, but definitely fun even if we know it's not good for us too often.  Anything less than 30 0 I try and resist playing too much, as to really get anywhere OTB and actually produce some good quality games longer time controls are needed.  I have a group http://www.chess.com/groups/home/slow-chess-european--african-time-zones where we play 90 0 or 45/45.  90 0 is closest to the time control played in my local league (1h15 for the first 35 moves, 15 mins for the remainder).  The advantage of the sudden death time controls is that at least you know the game won't go on indefinitely - 45/45 can last a hell of a long time.

I personally prefer 15|10 and 10|0.

Blitz and Bullet is also fun, but my internet has too much latency, so I usually play it live (face-to-face).

The difference between having time recover or not is that with recover, the chance of ending in a draw is much higher.

Yeah I enjoy 15/10 - done a few online tournaments for that on this server.  Did you ever play longer time control games regularly O-Youmu-Konpaku_o?  BTW all welcome to join the group if yr interested in longer time controls.

OTB I prefer 60|30 (40) + 15|30 to others. Well, never tried 120|0 (40) + 60|0 (20) + 15|30, so I don't know.

45|45 is fine for live chess, as yucca mentioned.

i like 90 minutes games sometimes with 30 second increment or 60 minute games. i usually play 3 minute blitz

CP6033

i dislike 15 +10 it is too long for blitz, but too short for standard

Interesting to note that in the real old days, I guess obviously, there were never any clocks used at all and I think I read Morphy et al's games could on for days.  So you could say that the truest forms of the game are without a clock, but that could provide some practical problems.  Generally anything over 30 0 can be counted in our group, by agreement of both players, but longer than that is preferable.

That time control is one of the best, since it combines excitement (time control without increment) with quality (enough time in the endgame).

does that mean 120/0 for the first 40 moves, 60 for the next 20 and so on?  Is that standard in a particular league or something?

Yes, it's the time that is used in the world championship matches and the Candidates.

OTB I like 1 minute hourglass, on chess.com I like 3|0 and 5|0.

Bardu

I prefer longer, OTB time controls, like those found at tournaments.

On the internet, I find myself playing in the 15 minute pools on ICC.

I like OTB with 3 days/ move, but I also play a lot of bullet games for fun ! From bullet times (2min-1sec and 1min) I prefer 1 min ! OTB and LIVE are another world !!

Kind of cross-posting here, as there was another thread about this, but would be good if we could have some pools for long time controls here on chess.com and, in an ideal world, be able to set up time controls with certain time limits for different numbers of moves etc, to replicate OTB time controls.  TBH I am sure a lot of this would be easier to programme than those 3D chess pieces, which look nice, but don't really add much.

BTW there is still time to get involved in the SCEATZ All-Play-All for Autumn http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/all-play-all-2-autumn-2013 if you like playing long time controls.

Useless_Eustace

5 minit chest agreez wit me.

90|30 is the best OTB. Games are roughly 3.5 hours long, which is a great compromise between having time to think deeply and not staying at the board from 3pm to 1am.

Online, I can't seem to focus on anything over 5|2. I used to play 15|0 on FICS, though.

johnyoudell

longer ones

Posters who like long time controls may be interested in the SCEATZ  winter All Play All tournament over December, January and February.
