White is right

The Thing (1982) dir. John Carpenter.
In the early part of the film before the shit-hits-the-fan, Macready (Kurt Russell) is playing on his ChessWizard computer. The board is set up thus:
Note that White is in check and can really only move to h3. It is Macready's move but the computer narrator tells us he enters: "bishop to knight four" and she responds with "knight to rook three". So instead of Macready being white and moving out of check he is actually black and the computer is white and has made a previous move that has ignored the check it is in. Macready's move weakens his attack to capture a defended pawn and white's move continues to ignore check...
But wait, there's more...
We are shown in the next shot the result of the previous moves is now this:
Macready is now white and moves "King to Rook one". We see this in the film but the computer, now black, checkmates him with "rook to knight six". It's mate in two at best.
But at least the scene ends with Macready calling the computer a "cheating bitch". It at least restores some credit to him.

What bugged me more in the Tudors were the chess sets. If I remember right the very first one could pass for period from a distance and you don't get to see it close but after that they play with a few more times each time with a different very obviuosly 20th century set. This looks like a publicity shot: http://www.film.com/wp-content/uploads/2004/09/19762587-19762590-large.jpg

In an episode of Monk:
Natalie's daughter plays against some master, she has the black pieces.
He says: "Your move"

This one time I read a book about chess and this grandpa was playing his granddaughter and they were happy and generic...and then I saw that the white king was on the side of the board.
After that I took a bath and went through therapy.
Oh, this reminds me of one of my chess sets: http://www.tykroll.com/chess/amber.html It wasn't on any TV show and I doubht it is actually Russian, though that's what I was told.
