Whites first move advantage

Yes, I remembered correctly: the game of checkers has been solved. With perfect play, the game ends in a draw. A scientific paper was published in Science magazine. Here is the link: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/1144079

This just shows how much more complicated chess is than checkers.

If chess is in fact a win for black then white starts the game in zugzwang.

xBeaStx

no way white starts in zugzwang lol

that would be extremely ironic (lol)

whether or not the game of chess ever gets 'solved' is pretty much irrelevant, if i gave you 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 winning moves, would you be able to memorise them? chess will live for ever :-)

TheMoonwalker

yes, think if chess gets "solved",

I don't think we want that to happen?

"Does white have an advantage?" Yes, but so does black.

Every move in chess has advantages and disadvantages, including the first move by White.   The key is for Black to find the move(s) that exploits the disadvantages of White's first move and equalizes.  Sometimes that doesn't happen right away, but rather after a series of well known moves. This series of moves also known as variations are what is known as opening theory.  It is a very tricky business requiring alot of study and practice.

outflank a better positioned opponant is the key to a a loss in initative

TheMoonwalker

My temporary conclusion is that the guy with the smartest brain has the advantage Cool

LOL, come on!!! I need a better conc...

Although white has the initiative(don't confuse this with advantage), his "extra move" can also end up hurting him. One person I played lost a tempo early in the game d3 d5 d4 and as black, I actually became white through transposition.

nonsense. starting a tempo down AND without initiative is definitely a disadvantage for black. the first 15-30 moves are often used just to overcome that, in order to reach equality.

I agree with GeoffreyBernardo there. I was always told that draughts and checkers were two names for the same game.

Back on topic, I personally find that White's advantage gained by having the first move increases as the strength of the two players decreases (i.e. White has a pretty good advantage when two pawn-pushers play, but only a minimal one when two grandmasters play)

I don't know if this has been said before, pardon my laziness for not reading the entire thread. I looked up this post because there was a man in a forum somewhere trying to turn white moving first as an advantage into a race argument. It piqued my interest and I came up with this answer. White only has the advantage as the first move if he's the one to checkmate black. Otherwise, in an instance where black checkmates white, the game ends with an even amount of moves and there is not an advantage for either side with the overall victory going to black.

Thanks,

AJ
