this is one of the most disgusting things I have seen. Are you kidding?
its a brillant showcase of something exotic ... and in what way is it disgusting ??
Beautiful set, but not something anyone would really want to play with. I'd have to agree that the House of Staunton does offer the best sets for playhing with today.
Back in the early 1980s I bought several sets from different Indian makers which are superb. The firms probably still make sets but sell them through named distributors instead of offering them on their own as they did then. A very nice addition, which they never mentioned in their classified adds, was that they shipped their sets in ornately carved rosewood boxes. The boxes alone now are probably worth a lot more than what I paid for the sets initially.
I've had to return some defective pieces from House of Staunton sets but in the end I was satisfied (and then some) with the quality of the set and the value for money.
HOS has standards that go higher as the sets get more expensive, and the lower tier
sets start out pretty nice. What HOS also offers is a wide range of designs. You can find at
least one you love. Especially lots that fall into what can be called a standard Staunton design. Indian houses have primarily proprietary Staunton designs, if you will; a departure from the Jaques designs that inspire many of HOS's sets (which I love and prefer most).
Other places are hard-pressed to offer such a great range of quality, design, and service. For US customers I think HOS is best, and even many customers in Europe still opt for HOS.
I actually want to buy a House of Staunton chess set now, and i can afford one, but the problem is the shipping costs ... no joke, to ship it to Australia costs over $250 lol ... can you believe that ?
... $250 could get you 2 or 3 cheap House of Staunton chess sets lol

Mouse over picture, for an opinion:
this is one of the most disgusting things I have seen. Are you kidding?

in what way is it a briliant showcase of anything exotic? what do you mean by exotic? its a vulgar display of wealth and completely tasteless. its looks like it was designed by highschool kids. I dont see how it has anything to do with art at all. have you ever been to an art gallery?
i have actually been to an art gallery ... many of them ... and believe me ... i've seen things that have no resemblence of art yet those items are displayed in the feature room of the galleries.
The only thing i agree with you on is "vulgar display of wealth", you can thank capitalism to that ... and no i do not like capitalism, but i am open minded.
The set is exotic in the sense that its a one off feature. its a concept design, its obviously not meant to be played with, its meant to be showed off, and it does exactly that. It honestly is a showcase of true craftsmanship, not anyone can put those jewels on those pieces you know ...
In what way is it designed by high school kids???
anyway ... dont know why i wrote so much lol
cheers,
this is one of the most disgusting things I have seen. Are you kidding?

I agree that the expense of the set makes it ostentatious and off-putting, but that's no reason to insult a designer who produced something beautiful just because of the materials that were used. If the same set was built out of bronze, steel, and colored glass instead of gold, platinum, and jewels, would you consider it a potential work of art? Take another look at the intricate detail on those knights, or the way the colors on the pawns work together. Also, though it's a cliche outside of the chess world, the decision to turn the knights into unicorns is kind of interesting given the unusual context. I actually don't think the king and queen are that interesting, but some of the other pieces are impressive.

any one there to challenge me
The Jaques Of London sets at the HOS site are really nice. And they're a steal at their lowest price ever of $5,295.00 USD (just joking). I like the look of most of the sets on the HOS site. They have a few on eBay I'm keeping my eye on. A nice 4.4" New York 1924 set just went for about $213, which is around a third of their list price.
I've also seen some nice sets here http://www.thechesspiece.com/ and here http://www.thechessstore.com/category/120_chess_sets__pieces_only_.110_wood_chess_sets/
just thought i'd get a general view ...
i know my fav has to be the House of Staunton, i've till this day never seen anything as good ... only problem is that i wish i had a set :( lol
