who created chess
I think it was charlie murphy, but Im not sure

yes, I always liked fischers desire to win plus a lot of his games I find instructive
I am pretty sure it was done in India thousands of year's ago More information here - http://www.chess.com/learn-how-to-play-chess.html#history
The origins of chess are not exactly clear, though most believe it evolved from earlier chess-like games played in India almost two thousand years ago. The game of chess we know today has been around since the 15th century where it became popular in Europe.
It is not conclusive where chess originated from ( far less who created the game), but the earliest game linked to chess is a game called "chaturanga"...played in India almost 1400 years ago...
Blame me. I started it. I was trying to create a variant of the game 'checkers' but things kind of got out of hand.
Chess started in the 6th century CE in India, but the modern rules were only introduced in the 15th century
A stranger(mathematician scholar) from somewhere visited to see Emperor of India in his court, he introduced dis game to the Emperor. The emperor loved the game and asked the scholar to ask for anythng! The scholar replied; "You can't fulfil my demands". The Emperor got angry and warned him Not to insult him. "Ask whatever you want, I can even give you my whole kingdom"- Emperor said angrily.
"Well, My Lord just give me few grains of wheat; but in a mathematical way"
"Go ahead!"
"Place 2 grains on the first square of the board, place 4 grains on the second square (ie. two-square). Likewise, square each number of grain on previous square and keep it on next square. All the 64 Squares must be filled. That's it Simple!"
"Very well then..." The emperor asks his Chief Minister in Court to calculate the total number of grains and give it to the stranger with respect.
The minsiter goes to calculate and after few hours comes running in court.
"Maharaj! Maharaj!! (Oh Lord!) the number of grains is very big. Nobody on earth could ever give him that quantity of grain"- minister cried.
"What the hell are you talk'n. How big is that number? I shall even give him all the grain in India."
"But Sire! the figure is larger than the distance between Earth and Moon."
The emperor with high respect alights from his throne, comes near the scholar and pleads to ask something else.
Giving a Smile, scholar asks for few gold coins and leaves the court..
Source: Read in a very old story book when I was a child.
Man was sat in the garden of Eden and said to God.
I undesrtand everything the birds, the animals, flowers everything, I am as clever as you are.
and God gave him a Chess set.
Here man understand this
I like that version best.
For the more literal minded it is now credited to the Mogul Emperors.
A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away...The grey aliens came to Earth, took a simian creature and over a period of 60000 years they genetically modified it 66 times until it became what we know today as a human being. Somewhere along the lines they gave us the game that we now know as Chess.
The game was a variation of a game they play themselves on their home planet, they modified it, designed it specifically to improve our thought process. On another note, they also play football on their home planet, or soccer to you Americans.
This is why historians cannot pinpoint exactly how and when this game came into existence because the general public refuse to believe in such things.
