No it is actually because most people wanted to play with the black pieces so they made white move first to even it out.
Well the Indian version was very different from what it is today.

nobody knows , at best we speculate , id be interested to know if in india or persia a deity was the goddess/ god of chess this might help in showing long cultural links to the game , i get that chattaranga was an exercise for military leaders in strategy , but india is a pantheistic country so wondering if theyve got a deity for it

ive got a feeling one of the 25 avatars of vishnu might be it , but there is also the greek(thracian ) goddess caissa , who is also a deity of chess , but no one has yet made the claim that Thrace is the home of chess
