I have met several in person. 5-6 GM's 5-6 IM's, I even have a couple of wins over an IM. Most I have met at tournaments by asking for a picture with them.

oh you were talking about titled chess players

i have seen a bunch of Gms in real life

they are all just regular people who can just play chess really well

why are you putting titled people on a pedestal?

TheOldReb

The toughest " killer's row " I ever faced was a rapid event in Lisbon Portugal .  After winning my first 3 games I then faced 6 fide titled players in a row : 4 IMs , 1 GM and 1 FM .  I played another event in which I played 4 GMs , out of 9 games .  In 25 years of tourney chess in the USA I played 4 GMs  total . While living in Portugal I met Spassky , Karpov and Kasparov and was most impressed by Spassky and least impressed by Kasparov and Karpov was in the middle . Spassky is a far nicer human being than either of the other 2 .

Lucky you, Spassky will be always one of the all-time chess heroes, because of play and personality.

I've faced GM Romero Holmes and FM Sergio Sánchez in simuls (being crushed in both cases) and IM Javier Moreno Ruiz (currently GM if I'm not wrong) and other IM wich name I don't remember (but I remember he looked like a bald Tarrasch) in a tournament. Here in chess.com I've met IM pfren and especially FM nobodyreally, who honoured me with his friendship.

I studied at the University of Helsinki and became good friends with IM Mikael Agopov (current FIDE rating 2433), who went on to become the chess champion of Finland in 2011. The other students and I had a small chess club going, but he would never play against the rest of us because playing against far inferior players might damage his play - except blindfolded. The day I met him, he was playing blind against another friend of mine sitting at the other end of a long table, all the while doing his theoretical physics exercises.

My fondest chess memory is getting drunk with him at his apartment. At one point, somebody suggested a blindfold game, and Mikael went to lie under his bed and called the moves from there. I played against him and could hold my own pretty well, until he suddenly said "Why didn't I see that before?" and went on to decimate me in about ten moves from what I thought was an even position. After that, we've sometimes analyzed some games together, and I've shown him some of my best games here on chess.com and he's been (mildly) impressed.

Thanks, Panda, I stand corrected. Sometimes I mistake him with Javier Moreno Carnero. Could be he the GM?

Pulpofeira

Very interesting, Azuki!

What ever happened to nobodyreally? I never see him anymore in the forums.
