Who invented the rule that a1 must a dark colored square?

ie;:

Tilt the chessboard 90 degrees and you no longer have dark colored square on a1.

Nobody.  It's just a natural result of the rule that a white square must be in the right hand corner.

That rule, of course, was invented by Ruy Lopez' twin brother, Dewey Lopez, who never had the skills or piety of his brother, but was quite persuasive and terribly bossy.

I have never thought about this question before, and I am interested as to where the proof of it can be found.  Does anyone know for certain?

without a decision, there cannot be a game.

The game is played by people that make decisions.

Evident is the fact that the blocks have to be the way they are, else we cannot play.

Originally, chess boards were only 7 squares on a side.  Thus, all corner squares (and the center square) were the same color.  It was only recently that an 8th square was added to each rank and file, to be used as a parity check for error correction.
