Who is Best Magnus Carlsen or Viswanathan Anand

Sort:

Anand is a living chess legend. Though he's also a product of an earlier era, where theory and ideas were purely human in construct.

Carlsen, by contrast, is a product of the engine era of chess, and it shows - his moves and lines are machine-like in their precision.

Carlsen is the stronger player. But Anand is still one the top players in the world.

Quasimorphy, do the math here. Kasparov has been world chess champion for 20 years. Magnus has been champion for 8 years. What’s 20 -8.

I was talking about months with the number one ranking, but it was really a rhetorical question.

Kasparov had it for 255 months.  I think Carlsen has had it for 137 months, so he needs to be no. 1 for almost another ten years.

What would the argument even be for Anand? No disrespect to him but it's obviously Magnus.

Which math makes Kasparov World Champion for 20 years? :-)

Kasparov was World Champion 1985-2000, but he didn’t defend the title for five years after 1995, before losing it 2000. He broke away from FIDE and didn’t have to play FIDE Candidates winners but could arrange his own cycle. So maybe one shouldn’t only count years, by the looks of it Carlsen will have to defend again already next year. For example Capa was World Champion six years just like Anand, but never defended the title successfully, while Anand did that in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

A million times Vishy. Kasparov is easily second. Then Hikaru. Maybe Fisher next, but I wasn't alive in the 20th century so who knows?
