Gukesh does have great potential. Funny, he's got pot wasn't making sense. I know I said Magnus earlier but I think Gukesh doesn't get enough respect. Magnus bangs the board & Hikaru tosses his king, both were quick to apologize, but this young man deserves better.

Gukesh is talented but Magnus is way more experienced

Magnus, for now. I don't really think this is close. Magnus won like all the tournaments he played this year. Gukesh sometimes plays well, sometimes doesn't, so I think he's way too inconsistent. But in the future, I think Gukesh might be better.

Has he played any serious tournaments at all this year?

It seems to me that all he played was 960, rapid, blitz and similar nonsense.

He scored 1,5/2 at the 2024-25 Schach Bundesliga, 6/8 at the Olympiad and 6/10 at Norway Chess 2025. All these added 8 points to his rating.

Thats just a strange question.

Elo doesnt lie.

At currently 2839, Magnus is the strongest player of the world, and at his maximum 2882 he was the best player on record and possibly ever (Elo was only introduced around 1970).

While Gukesh is currently only the number 11 of the world, at "only" Elo 2752.

The advantage of Gukesh is simply that he's still very young. So maybe he manages to get to Elo 2880, too. I kind of doubt it though. Magnus was already beyond 2800 at this age.

Frankly there are many amazingly strong young chessmasters. So maybe Gukesh will end up being a one time WM just like the previous WM, Ding Liren.

Imo gukesh has a bit of the slightest advantage in classical compared to magnus, everything elsa magnus is better. Note : keyword is opinion.

I guess you do know that Gukesh is currently at #10, and Carlsen is at #1 since the pigs were flying, no?

Due to a peculiar feature of the Elo system, Magnus (and Hikaru and Anand) can preserve their spot by simply not playing.

Under a more reasonable rating system, like in tennis, where you have to earn points every year, Magnus would probably be rated around number 100 in the world, given that he skipped all big tournaments except Norway Chess.

Gukesh plays great chess, but Magnus is a great chess player

The only reason Gukesh is the current world champion is because magnus decided he didn't want to be the champion anymore.
