    That's a common misconception!

Sorry, but which part is a misconception? That Catalan is a language not a dialect? That it's spoken by around 10 million people? That it's as ancient as English or Spanish?

I am voting for Kerry Shirts aka as "The Backyard Professor" as the best in the world.  He started his chess career by losing his first couple of games in order to lull his opponents into a false of security.

    Kramnik

I reckon Carlsen...great win record. Yes this thread should be cleaned up....my vote is for the current best.

No, it shouldn't, it should become more slovenly!  It needs to be lived in a bit by this guy:

I believe he deserves his position as highest rated and now wonder if maybe he is better than Kasparov was.  Maybe.  That kind of comparison is always difficult though.

And shatranj is chess. You wouldn't say that Lasker played Schach, or Capablanca played Ajederez, so they were no chess players, would you? But granted, back then the rules were not the same as today.

Shatranj and chess are related, but very dissimilar.

Shatranj is what chess is called today in Hindi, Urdu and Persian [and Chaturanga or Sathurangam in some other Indian / Turkic languages], though it had different rules in the past.

  • #156
