Also i see a pattern among most of the champions, fading after they win the world championship. You can only imagine the work and hours put in before every match in a climb like that. Once they have won it seems as if they dont want to put in the time anymore and just run on what they know...maybe nothing more to prove. In his later years bobby fischer talked about how he hated standard chess because there was nothing left to be creative everything was known lines...

I don't know enough to even have an opinion but from what I've seen Morphy was awfully good for his time. I think he would have been very competitive against today's players, given the same resources and training they have
