Kasparov, in his prime. Although Bobby is my favorite chess hero, I have to admit Gary was the deeper thinker. I studied both their best games back in the 1980's and concluded Gary had a slight edge. I suspect Gary, who taught Anand simply allowed him to be champ.

Magnus, however, based on his own assertion, has seemingly super powers as far as chess is concerned.

yeah but who would dethrone carlsen that is the question👑

That was my way of saying "Nobody". I just wanted to point out that Kasparov, in his prime, was the best I had seen until Magnus showed up.

that is correct but still there are candidates who are awesome like Wesley so little behind carlsen isn't bro😐

The top five is so close in strenght that it is about who has the best days, and if they were lucky with preparations. I remember when Caruana was in the flow. He made 7 wins in a row in a Sinquefield cup. That performance was good enough to win a candidate tournament. Last candidates it was Karjakin that had the good feeling. We dont know who is going to have the fantastic tournament. Maybe Nakamura, maybe Giri, maybe So, maybe Caruana, or why not Karjakin once more? or Anand, or Aronian. They are all good enough, if they get the flow.

you forgot kramnik man😀

Yes, I forgot Kramnik, Mamedjarov  and MVL

R Praggnanandhaa.

  • He is the youngest International Master in history, at the age of 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days.
He is very likely to eclipse Sergey Karjakin’s long-standing world record as the only pre-teen player to achieve the grandmaster title.

  • In one of the matches that Magnus Carlsen played with 40 people at the same time it was only Praggnanandhaa in the room who was able to secure a draw while rest all lost.

  • He recently beat GM Axel Bachmann (ELO 2645) in 18 moves in one of the recent tournaments.

I would have to say Wesley So. He's showed so much consistency over the past year.

Given that there's no World Championship match this year - nobody 😏

You can't threaten the title unless you can get in a match to play for it.  It is unlikely Wesley will qualify for a match for the title.  The current candidates system is not set up to have the strongest player challenge the champion.

yeah I know I wrote 2017 by mistake it is 2018 but whoever it should be he should be a tough challenger like top 5 🍪

While he is not the best, Hikaru. Carlsen is the best player in the world. For someone to beat him, they need to cause problems, you can't beat carlsen by being solid. For that reason I take Naka

I thought Karjakin's chances were pretty good after round 8 of his match until he finally lost the match on tiebreaks.

But yes the candidates format is a bad one.  And it is unlikely Wesley So will be in a world chess championship match in 2018 even if he is the best player to challenge Carlsen.   It is sad seeing so many of the top older players missing their chances due to a poor qualifier system.

yeah stupid system the odds were against karjakin I would have even loved levon or kramnik in his place not him a waste defence caruana and Wesley were totally wasted in 2016 because of this poor system 🐥
