#1. Bobby Fischer Most Americans who don't even know how to play still know about him. #2. Magnus Carlsen The current world champion, and probably one of the greatest prodigies to ever walk the earth. #3. Paul Morphy The first (unofficial) world champion and romantic agressive fanatic. Unfourtunately 2 of these guys turned insane after chess. I hope the same doest happen to Magnus.

Bart Simpson.

Darkness_Prevails

In chess.com it had to be Morphy.: )

MickinMD

The latest or most colorful World Champs, after Sofia Vergara, who got paid more for the episode of Modern Family where she beat Jay in chess ("Checkmate in two moves!") than the top 10 Grandmasters combined earn in a year:

Wonder if she plays the Twin Peaks Gambit.

I'd have to go with Bobby Fischer as the most talked about.  Morphy and Tal up there too.

I had to Google it just to find out if "Checkmate in two moves" is even possible. It is. As to the income disparity... well lets just hope the GM's here don't read the forums.

Fischer, but only because Americans can't think outside their own little world. The guy was in trouble here there and everywhere. He's not even that good compared with top players today. Kasparov was by far the worlds best in that era but even he would probably have trouble with some of the top players out there. Back to Fischer, ok he could beat me, but he was a knob

See, lol, people are still slamming on and talking about Bobby.

American Airlines... really?

He helps open doors?

macer75

Probably Kasparov, given how active he has been in fields outside of chess. But it could also be Fischer. I would be very surprised if it's anyone other than these two though.

VladimirHerceg91

I think Karpov as he was the sport's most dominant, and celebrated champion.

president_max

As i've revealed in the duck resurrection thread, karpov was the first chess champ to take oral hygiene seriously.  So yes, karpov.

Toss up.

Candidates, and I deliberately do not order them publicly, but I have a strong opinion.

Fischer

Morphy

Kasparov

Tal

Carlsen

Capablanca

Alekhin

Lasker

Tarrasch

Philidor

Ruy Lopez

Karpov

Ostap Bender

Nimzovich

Bramblyspam

I really don't care what the answer is, but I have a question about the question: If someone says "Ruy Lopez", does it count if they're referring to the opening and not the player? wink.png

Ok, now that ostap's been mentioned, it's free for all ...
