Who is the strongest player ever in the history of chess

No offense to Carlsen but every generation thinks the current champ is the best 🙄

Technically Magnus Carlsen has the highest peak rating out of everyone, with Kasparov being second. Everyone has their opinions though. I for one do not really know who is the best, as I did not watch Kasparov play or anyone from that time. I will say this though, Magnus Carlsen sure is an exceptional chess player whether or not he is #1

Morphy. Best attacker ever. I respect the other opinions. Just don't start giving rating proofs. I just like morphy

I was not saying Magnus was the best I was just stating a fact. Also yes, Morphy is a very good player. I have not studied too many of his games though

Tal was very good at swindling, which in no way is a bad thing. He is losing by a lot and then suddenly its a drawing position

The strongest: Magnus. The greatest: Fischer.

Not Botvinnick because although he was extremely strong, (a) it was at a weak point in chess history and (b) there's something a bit infelxible about his style.

Smyslov was one of the strongest. Fischer and Capablanca obviously spring to mind. I suspect Katpov and Kasparov were like Botvinnick .... extremely strong but not quite the strongest.

Could be Smyslov.

Dominance over their peers.

Maybe Grecco

Botvinnik. The only player to win the world championship and then lose it...but win it back...but then lose it and then win it back. Nobody has ever done that but Botvinnik. He also trained Karpov... Kasparov and Kramnik

Losing the world championship is not evidence for being the strongest chess player.

All of the world champions have lost the title. 🤔 Alekhine died and Fischer ran away but all of the others played and lost so do you think all of them are weak? Botvinnik faught to get his title back...twice!

This will always be a controversial question. It is difficult to compare players from different generations. If Bobby Fischer had grown up with engines such Stockfish to practice against he would have probably been an even stronger player than he was.

I would still go for either Kasparov or Carlsen though. I think Magnus Carlsen will stay World Champion for several more years.

But there are many brilliant players to celebrate and it is good to look through their games.

Alekhine was world champion when WW2 started in Europe. The war had a great impact on chess players (and everybody else at the time). He was notorious for ducking Capablanca in the pre-war years, but afterwards he passed away, and in the void he left behind, FIDE decided to hold a tournament to claim the next world champion, and that event was won by Botvinnik.

Capablanca--his peak was a century ago but still today someone who seemingly effortlessly rolls to a win vs a top grandmaster who makes no serious mistake gets compared to Capablanca. Lasker said he didn't want to defend his title vs Capablanca as he couldn't possibly be defeated, and then just gave up in the middle of the match without winning a single game.

Morphy--his understanding of chess was so far ahead of his time that Steinitz and Tarrasch used his play to come up with their theories of positional play. He was stronger than any other player by a wider margin than anyone else has ever been. And he did it while taking a break between law school and starting his legal career--he didn't think chess was all that important.

Tal--his games remain some of the most interesting and entertaining games ever.
