WHO TAUGHT YOU HOW TO PLAY CHESS

My mother taught me when I was 8 and stopped playing me when I was 10 as she got creamed every time (sorry mum). For me, though, at that age it was just another game like (ugh) Monopoly and so on. Did not learn what a beautiful game it was till I was 21. I am 42 now and I know I will never be a master but my life has been enriched for rediscovering the game.

I honestly don't remember. My earliest memory of playing chess was when i was 10. I think i first learned from chess books from the school library although it may have been from someone at a summer recreation program. I only started taking chess seriously when i was in my late 20s and i joined a chess club.

Everybody after #87 is guilty of necrobumping a five year old thread. I mean come on, Rich posted in this thread. When Trumpnut has posted in a thread, it should be put in a museum.

When i was 10 there was no one in my family or any friend that i knew of that played chess, yet i was interested in it. What i did was check out a book at the school library and went out and bought a cheap set. I think it got me off to a good start.

I learned chess from a classmate when I was 13-14. However, I never learned how to castle before I started to play online.

and now 3 years on, the wisdom holds true.

My dad, when I was 5 years old. Actually he was teaching my 8 year old brother, but I watched and learned too.

My older sister. My dad had tried but he didn't know how the pieces moved ! My sister was good enough to write to the local club secretary to get me involved as well. One of my biggest regrets is throwing away the return letter some time ago when I was clearing out. I noticed that Fischer had kept his mother's letter to his chess club and its in a Fischer games anthology.
I taught myself how to play by losing games
