I learned  in the early-to mid 80's on a electronic chess board-it was hard as hell to win. The easy skill level was not that easy and it never made mistakes. I then played  in the navy and college afterwards.  I had nobody to play after college so my game went dorment. I  played on chessmaster for a while  and then stopped . I then found this great site and I am  trying toknock the rust off and also have no desires to be a GM lol

The World Book Encyclopedia.  I saw a strange game being played on TV and asked my Mom what they were doing.  Must have been 8 or 9.  Looked it up, took out a book or two from the library to make sure I understood the rules, and then taught a playmate or 2, after I begged the folks for a chess set. Never was worth spit at it.

Well.....its was a dark night deep in the jungles of Borneo. I had just lost two wingmen early that day to headhunters as we were trying to navigate a path to fresh, untainted water. Water that was free of the dreaded triple lipped sickle celled sap sucker and the diseases that it carried....

I taught myself from a book.

....next thing I know I woke up in a seedy strip bar on the outskirts of Jacksonville Florida, with a giant mammoth toe staring at me none the less. Across the bar I noticed these odd little pieces scattered about, must have been part of one of the shows. I learned later that these pieces were to be called "Pawns"....

Now then, Tactical, let's not be talking nasty about the outskirts of Jacksonville Florida.  That's too close to home.
