who the best chess player of all time?
No one really knows, but if every great player of all time had today's training tools, I think it would be Bobby Fischer. There are two arguments in favor of him.
1. Counting just the games at his peak, he played at the highest rating level of all time. No one else has played in any period as high as Fischer did.
2. No one has dominated the top players in the world during his time as Fischer did at his peak. In the 1970 Palma Interzonal Fischer had 15 wins, 7 draws, and 1 loss. In the candidates matches he won 6 wins 0 losses, 6 wins 0 losses, and 5 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss - the last against previous World Champion Tigran Petrosian. He toyed with Spassky in the World Championship match, several times using Queen's Pawn openings he never used before in his life.
Of course, Fischer knew much, much more about chess than me and Bobby believed that Paul Morphy was the greatest chess player of all time.
