Hi pattrik ,I deleted the comment because I had posted what I thought would be a small photo of myself with the comment so that anyone could see who I was.It turned out to look huge on the screen. So anyway I tried to delete the photo & my whole comment vanished haha.Any way I started a topic asking who people thought was the best chess player of all,& I mentioned I like Lasker as he held the world title for nearly 28 yrs  with a brief interuption.Regards

Sadly, it isn't Kasparov, Fisher, Capablanca, Alekhine, Anand, Lasker, Carlsen or any other human. It's probably between Rykba and Stockfish Smile

" Who " indicates a person and not a machine. If someone asked who can lift the most weight would you respond sadly a forklift ?

Capallblanca

Whatever engine he was using did....

Botvinnik would be my choice, several times he managed to come back from being defeated.

It depends on what type of player

Mikhal Tal was the worlds best attacking mind and Kasparov can calculate amazingly fast

But my personal favorite is Tal and Fischer :)

It's nice to be able to get a rematch or 2.  Capablanca.  He is Cuban.

When really looking at everything it is impossible to know who was the greatest champion ever, Euwe was under rated but not the best ever .lasker has to be considered & Alekhine based on his dethroning Capablanca is a strong choice .I respect all of them .Cool

2200ismygoal

Though I cannot pick a "best" Fischer and Kasparov are my number one and two choices.

3. Lasker (Great Fighting Spirit)

4. Tal (Brought complications against a scientific chess world)

5. Alekhine

6. Capablanca

7. Morphy

8. Anand

I think that he must have been something of a centaur, since he couldn't have reached that without beating other engine users.

For me, Kasparov is probably the best ever from an objective perspective. It may be Anand or Kramnik though.

My favorite players of all time include Rubinstein, Alekhin (who I consider to be better than Capablanca), Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand. They were each the best in the world for some time. Rubinstein, the only player on the list who was never world champion, was probably the best player in the world when WWI broke out. (By favorite, I only refer to their games of chess, not their personalities or decisions away from the chess board.)

Well, the last great tournament before  war broke out was St Petersburg 1914 and Rubinstein was playing like Betty White out there. The man had lost his mojo!Cool

No question; it has to be Kasparov.

RathHood

1.Kasparov - consistant domination for two decades. No one comes even close. (Lasker was a champ for 27 years, but he wasn't dominating, just picking 'right' opponents)

2.Karpov - before Kasparov he was a dominant force for 10 years. And for another 10 he was the only one in the world who could seriously threaten Kasparov.

3.Fischer

4.Capablanca

5.Alekhine

Babe Ruth.
