Now-Carlsen easily.
Carlsen now vs Kasparov in his prime...who knows.

i meant Carlsen now vs Kasparov in his prime--> i sort of changed the forum a bit
I think Magnus is stronger. He has the combinaton of tactics (Kasparov) and the ability to play positional (Karpov). A perfect blend.
maybe if Carlsen worked on his openings... lol anyway who knows? I'd say probably Kasparov.
I think Magnus has a diverse and well balanced opening repertoire. He shows great flexability and his opponents are having a real hard time to keep up with him.Maybe it doesn't look all that spectacular (like Tal) but his positional play far exceeds that of Karpov (Capablanca).
I'm afraid to look at Kasparov's games for the most part because he excels at very complicated positions that require deep and wide brute forcing. I looked at a couple of his games, one from Linares in 1994 and another was a blitz from 2008, and those didn't even scratch the surface of his abilities.
Carlson's games are entertaining to look at and require more assessment and judgment rather than using those skills at the end of many sometimes deep variations, so they're less intimidating to study.
I think Kasparov in his prime would narrowly win against him.

Who will win? Garry Kasporov or Magnus Carlsen
if they play a match against each other at their prime time
