Magnus and Bobby Fischer were two of the three of the best chess players to ever live. The third one is Garry Kasparov. I think Magnus is better, but as 2wal2t2erhi said, Magnus has coaches and engines, while Bobby Fischer only had books.

Take away all the outside factors, leave only ELO and stats, and Magnus is clearly better. His rating's one of the highest of all time, he was world champion for 8 years while Bobby was WC for only 3, and he's considered a genius. However. Magnus uses tons of coaches, engines, partners, and he has support from basically everyone in the world. Bobby had books and like, 1 or 2 study partners. As an American in a time where the Soviet Union ruled chess, nobody was in favor of Bobby. Most Americans probably didn't care or maybe even known about his existence. It was basically impossible for an American to beat any sort of Russian grandmaster, much less the top grandmasters in the world. Yet, still, Bobby beat that by a long shot, despite not having analysis teams, spectacular coaches, or any other advantage whatsoever, something that Russian grandmasters could have easy access to. It takes a tremendous amount of genius to be able to beat the best of the best with only books and your brain! It's like getting first place in a marathon in a wheelchair! Since the end of the Soviet Union chess reign, chess has been given support from everywhere in the world. You can learn entire openings on YouTube, find a virtual chess coach from anywhere around the world, sit back and relax on your couch as you listen to someone explain chess, and even analyze with top engines if you're really serious about the game. Magnus has all of that. Bobby had almost none.

I think Bobby Fischer was the best chess player to ever walk on this earth. He beat everyone despite all the odds- he inspired Americans to take up chess for themselves, in a world where Russia ruled the entire game. If he was in his prime today, I'd even say he would be WC. But, Magnus is an amazing chess player unmatched by almost anyone today and I still agree he's one of the best players of all time.

Carlsen stated that he was tired, unmotivated, and he didn't have a good time playing extremely top-level chess. He said that he already did what he had to do, and that he didn't have anything else to do. He didn't gain anything by playing the WCC. He won every single world championship since 2014, there is no reason for him to be scared. He won against Nepo various times, probably the second choice for world champion if Magnus were to leave (of course then Ding came along). Magnus felt like playing the WCC wasn't useful, beneficial, or fun anymore, and chess is a game! Magnus is a multi-millionaire! He could retire this very second! Yet he still plays chess. Nobody can blame him for quitting the WCC, because he's still choosing to play chess despite every reason not to. People are mad at him because they can't see that he isn't an analysis engine, he's a human being just like the rest of us.
