In my experience most people don't feel this way at all.
In fact if I win, but I played poorly, it feels... not like a loss, but there's that feeling of "I suck" or "I need to improve" or something like this.
Because we're better than non chess-players.

Just see Giris tweets. Fisher once i read he plays vs Russian (not sure who some big name) and game is splitted in 2 days. After end of day 1 Fisher says out loud: I will win this 100%; or i cant lose in this position; and walks away out of the room. That night friends of the russian analyze game whole night and finds solution, Next day Fisher loses and leaves without saying anything.
