why are my chess games so different from those between good players?

well, ive played 4 tournaments (still not rated, so not sure of my level)..to be honest, i am below average (patzer - thats d word i think)...all my games ive won as d other guy made a mistake...

my kind of chess seems all about tactics...just looking ahead 3 or 4 steps at d max, sometimes just one or two..

after i finish my games and have a look at d other tables, especially the top ones, d games seem all balanced, with all connected and protected pieces, with no tactical possibilities...i will bet i will never get into such intricate positions

what should i do to achieve such balanced positions (i vud love to play long, positional games), or get a chance to play at top tables? or all i can do in my life is watch them and envy those playing them, like they are people out of this world? i do love chess, but it seems i like only games that others play, and am not able to like my own games

oh look someone who just joined the site and has already posted two forum topics. by 3 to 4 "steps" do you mean 3 to 4 full moves or half moves? 3-4 half moves would only be 1 1/2-2 full moves. common point of confusion.

what you want is easy to achieve

just play some closed debuts, more pawn blokades etc

try reading some nimtzovich stuff or even watch snooker for inspiration on how to completely block opponents game

thats way better progress than someone who has joined the site 3-4 months back and still falls in the category of 'unrated'.

Oh snap! Laughing

I used to be in your shoes.  I would look at amateur games in databases and not distinguish them from master and above games.  Now that I'm better I sometimes see mistakes even in NM games and can typically tell them apart from IM games.  IM and super GM games on the other hand still has some trouble distinguishing between quality most often.  Last IM mistake I saw was black moving the king to the wrong square in a pawn ending, handing white an advantage, who in turn threw it away an drew.

It's almost certainly time trouble to blame if I can see where they went wrong before engine checking or I still have some Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual principles fresh in my mind. I don't like how so many of the problem positions are draws though.
