Why aren't the forums more serious?

Hypocrits....hypocrits....hypocrits

The biggest trolls are those who complain about trolls. This is why Erik don't give a shit.

Serious about mostly rubbish?

The forum moderation (or lack thereof) is one of the things I am most dissatisfied with on this site.

Trolls and spammers taking over most of the forums is just the logical consequence of it I guess.

But it's Eriks site, so he can do whatever he wants to with it. *shrug*

You're right, but how can you deal with ALL the trolls and spammers? It's out of control.

Money talks.  If you want real serious chess discussion, you will need to join ICC.  Chess.com is a really good site, but it is what it is.

You dont go to elementary school and expect to get college level discussions.

Then why even ask?  This makes you part of the problem.

What exactly would you like to see different?

This thread must seem very interesting to you to create a new sock puppet account for it.

But, pardon me, Becky_the_back_Stabber, with FIDE rating 12, but might
you happen to have any Grey Poupon?

It's one of life's finer pleasures. What I would give right now for just a touch of it on my morning ham.

If you are serious about chess, stay away from the forums. The forums are for smart alecs who think IQ has nothing to do with chess, whereas real intelligent people go for it in chess.

Beleive it or not, I have received help reading and asking advise on forums.  But maybe it is because I am not real intelligent. Be then, I play chess for the sheer joy of it.

This site attracts a high percentage of unserious people.  It's what you get when you set out to be the Wal-Mart of internet chess.

Those seem like logical suggestions.

Just get rid of free memberships, and 99% of the childish members will vanish overnight.  But apparently that is not Erik's preferred business model.  The site probably makes much more income from adverisements than from paid memberships, and paying members don't see the ads.

Well first, we people like to fool around.

Avatar of James1011James1011

Second, most forums are just about games we played and other random stuff that shouldn't be important anyway

Avatar of James1011James1011

Finally, this is supposed to be fun. The forums aren't supposed to be serious, they're just playgrounds where we socialize and talk about random stuff.

Please stop spamming.

idk, I've seen some really funny free-form humorous writing here that is irreverrent and whimsical, perhaps some view that as childlish, and some of it is imo, but where do you draw the line?

And who gets to decide, and on what basis...personal taste?

You cant and shouldnt get rid of the free memberships.  But what you can, and should do is severely limit what free members can contribute in the forums.  Something like 1 post an hour for the first month.  Members forum posts shoule be reviewed, and those that have no self control, and contribute nothing are blocked from the forums.

I think Erik likes things the way they are, so nothing will change. The answer is to either grow a thick skin or avoid the forums.
