Why aren't the forums more serious?

Just get rid of free memberships, and 99% of the childish members will vanish overnight.  But apparently that is not Erik's preferred business model.  The site probably makes much more income from adverisements than from paid memberships, and paying members don't see the ads.

Getting rid of free memberships would turn a forum full of answers and activity to one that crawls to a stop. Imagine looking at a forum page and seeing months between posts, and no answers or replies to any of them. This is tame compared to most of the forums I go to. I like it. I'm not sure what the complaint is.

Gives one time to contemplate before posting something silly.

It's simply a bandying about of semantics, FMnobodyreally.

That's the crux of the matter.

Geez, that was a joke. Do I really have to explain it?

"pointless, distracting posts". <---->  What's your point?

ps. just NR. will do (not FMnobodyreally.)

If chess.com got rid of free membership who would the paying members look down on?  There is already a premium forum and it sees little traffic.

It's like that on the other forums I go to. There's a lesson to be learned there. When I seek out forums for my many interests and hobbies, I find mostly dead inactive ones, there are only a few active good ones per interest that I stick to.

Who wants to go to a forum where there are days or weeks between posts?!?

If  you don't like something is it that hard to just scroll past it?

I'm sorry that you made a joke that you had to explain; better luck next time.Laughing

I am happy with the lack of mod presence. Much better than over-moderation. I don't want to be afraid of getting an infraction if a couple "offensive" words find their way into my posts. Ignore pointless threads and posts if you dont like them. I get much more annoyed with serious posts that are moronic. Learn to appreciate humor everywhere and not be so dry all the time... Much of the humor on here is actually quite intelligent. I'm sorry if you can't see that.

I agree. Besides, the morons give me something to laugh at.

I'm aware that chess is a game. But it's a game of intellect so why does the forum look like YouTube or Facebook? I'm not looking for an answer because I have my own opinions that I bet alot of folk share. It's just something curious, we could be helping build great players and new world wide relationships but instead it's just all amounted to shit. excuse my latin. Also as a side note would not chess.com share money by refining the rules and guidelines of the forum? At least save server space? All in I love chess.com but the community has a few piles that need cleaning up so that everyone could profit and enjoy the game.

No, it would be as dead and unknown as the forums I am talking about.

Compare the member forum to the publc forum. Where do people go. They go where there might be sillyness and trolls.

If you don't like general discussion in a forum of general discussion, go to a forum geared to a specific topic and avoid forums of a general nature.

Father is eat potato....

Also, this thread is getting too serious.

Is it okay if I still post [first page!] whenever I do the daily puzzle?

If it's ok then allright.

For good or bad, the demographics of this place flipped once live chess got off the ground.  Think gameknot, yahoo chess, etc..

Interesting and subjectively believable hypothosis. But Live Chess may be driving the profits.

Yeah that's the ticket. Get rid of the game that is central to the very existance of the forums. After all, why would we want to play chess on a chess website, when we could be complaining about why people talk about things other than chess on a chess website.

My mind. You know what it's full of.

My father once visited an insane asylum. In a room there, he saw laughing people playing with their feces. They were the most happy people he had ever seen in his life.

Can't I say anything in jest without being taken serious, geez.

Or you could use the amazing coorespondence feature that's right below the livechess.  Amazing, you can get rid of anybody who does not have patience which is mostly children while still being able to play chess.  I do not see an issue here unless of course, you subscribe to the above group.  It could be that you are unable to read and find the coorespondence chess tab, but in that case you probably have too low of an IQ and the only solution I can offer is that you just turn your computer off.  You endanger us by your ignorance.

Internet (forums) show us 'The Rise Of The Trash People'. And we love it! Or: 'The Revenge Of The Lower Classes'. I just wonder what Winston Churchill would have said about it all :-)
