I am a 15 year old boy in South Africa, currently in the 9th grade... I have been representing my school very well especially in terms of chess... A few months ago i reached the provincial level, unfortunately i wasn't good enough to win and qualify for the nationals. As time went by... The deputy principal started making funny comments when we were playing chess during lunch times, it came to the point where i and my friends at school realized that no actually this guy does not like chess or he doesn't even want to see it being played in the school. Well a few days ago, the 10th graders were playing chess during teaching and learning time in the class while they were getting ready to go for a school trip. The deputy principal saw them and took the chess set away from them... Then he came to my class where most of chess players in the school are... He started by taking our chess board that was by the corner of our classroom and said this" well i have noticed chess has been a big distraction in our school so no more chess until the end of this term"... So chess is banned in my school and it means during lunch time we won't be playing chess... So my question is why do you think this deputy principal hates chess so much?

Throughout history, smart people (or people doing anything different) are the object of jealousy and ridicule. Sadly that is how the world works. Don't ever be disheartened by what someone says. Keep playing chess

You should play xiangqi or shogi and when the deputy principal asks, just say, "this isn't chess".

Strange; it's so weird to see people in high positions like your principal act like evil douchebags, seeing as south africa is otherwise such a wonderful and well functioning society.
