Why Can't Black Play King Takes Queen?

I've seen people overcomplicate the concept of check and checkmate, but I'm not sure why. The game of chess is really quite simple. Capture the enemy king. If checkmate didn't exist, every game would either result in a draw, a resignation, or the actual capture of a king. Yet the rules and mechanics of play would be absolutely identical. All this nonsense about not moving into check is needlessly obtuse in my opinion. All you have to do is allow a player to move into check once, capture their king, and they'll never do that again, and no official rule need ever be composed to prevent it.
