Chess was created by aliens, ask Kirsan Iluzminhov (close enough) why. On a more serious note, I think it was just created (by humans, lol) as a challenging game.

From Egyptian board games to Japanesse Shogi, the human mind always have searched for a square two dimensional structure to project n-dimensional shape movement, so, chess is the most beautiful armony of those objects crossing trough the square under human mind rules. Just my humble point of view.
I hope chess never be found, so I never lost a game of chess
