#246, during cold war era there was a battle between US and Soviet Union on every aspect including chess. US spent too much for chess players in that period to break russians. They did it finally by bobby Fischer, and after that they didn’t need him. But he was used to be in center of attentions and since they didn’t care about him he went crazy. Imagine going to Yugoslavia and taking side of a dictator just to show how you hate US.

I don't have many good things to say about Fischer besides his chess, but I would not accuse him of being a publicity hound...I think for decades hardly anyone even knew what continent he was living on.
If he wanted publicity after 1972 he sure went about it in a sub optimal way.

Yeah I can agree with contenchess here. In Soviet Union times it was basically a paid profession for them.
