Good question — and I can see why it was confusing!
Even though the rating difference between you and your opponent wasn’t huge (1220 vs 1208), the rating system still expects the higher-rated player to win more often. Since you were slightly higher rated, the system considered your loss as a bit of an upset, which is why you lost 18 points, while your opponent only gained 8.
It can feel like a lot, but that’s just how the Elo system balances risk vs. reward based on expected outcomes. If you win against a much higher-rated player, you’ll see the same effect in reverse — you might gain 15–20 points in one go!
