is it just me or has anyone else noticed that SOME of the higher rated chess players on this site seem to have let their rating inflate their ego to the point where they get on live chess and proclaim their chess divinity and proceed to point out to the lower rated players and noobs that they could "own" you all in chess . chess is supposed to be about learning an art form and most of all to have fun. if you cant have fun without putting people down thats sad. you higher rated players should encourage the lower ranked players and the noobs. I am a noob to this site technically. i've won a few and lost a few but each time i played a game win, lose, or draw i alway told my opponent good game. and that's the way it should be. anyone feel free to comment even if it's negative. i can take criticism with a grain assault. it won't hurt my feelings trust me.

Rookbuster

I have not noticed that.  A few rude players not necessarily higher rated, but for the most part i've found good sportsmanship.  Infact i've become really  good friends with a few who crush me in nearly every game we've played, but are always helpful.

Although I don't play in the live chess nearly as much as the other

beacuse they can.... No, 1 out of 1000 are masters so..... 1 out of 1000 maters

ARE THE WORLD BEST...guess we must get over it.... But for real do we really

need to worry about what they think?  Are you going to cry a river if someone dies of not eating tonite?  SEE MY POINT... ENERGY THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED

ABOUT... 1 IS A GOOD WORRY THE OTHTER... 2 HOW SHALLOW AND WHO CARES....  how sick human kind is to worry more about a game than people dying... WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR MOTHER THAT  HAD NO FOOD,  OR SHELTER..

how sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you look at the history of chess, most of the best had huge egos about it.

BadBishop51

well most of the time i encounter good sportsmanship too, thats why i capitilized the word some in the begining paragraph. but i've ran into a few and most of them not even extremely high rated just relatively high compared to everyone else playing. but for some reason those few just have to bolster and rip on everyone, or a specific player in the room.  i mean  it's ok brag a little but i just don't like seeing cross the line.

BadBishop51

well queenofdeath if you wanna blog about world hunger and poverty go somewhere and blog about it. i didn't because guess what this forum is for general CHESS discussion that would probably be the reason why i didn't post a topic on world hunger now wouldn't it?

BadBishop51

well that is true stagg but i highly doubt the people i'm talking about are any where near being the best players in the country. so why the enormous ego?

TheGrobe

I'm pretty sure there are jerks at every rating level, it's just that the ones with higher ratings may be more inclined to be vocal about their "chess superiority" here.  Being a jerk is one thing, but being a jerk with something you can laud over people?  That's a recipe for all sorts of poor behaviour.

jonnyjupiter

It's the same in every walk of life - there are people who need to boast about how good they are at something. Take comfort in the fact that if they need to belittle others to get their kicks then they are pretty empty inside on at least one level.

Whatever you do, don't play people who boast and belittle others - you'll just give them ammunition and get stressed by having to deal with them. If you lose and they rant then you will just get angry. Become friends with the higher rated players who give you good advice and help you become a better player, challenge them to a few unrated games and ask for feedback - this way you improve AND stay chilled.

I haven't been faced with such players... far from it! I've known one rated above 2000 who I asked what is needed to get such a rating and he answered with a very detailed response.

broze

I have certainly been faced with those kinds of players on this site who say things to you they wouldn't dare to say to someone with a similar rating, however as jerks go I think there are just as many low-rated as high.

Most people I have met on this site have been very friendly and helpful.

Nope. I've played a few more live chess games than you have, and I've never encountered a player rated higher than me acting in this manner. I've twice seen that from new players (1200 & 1350) but the mods acted swiftly, warning and then ejecting the offenders when they failed to stop. What does it reflect about you, that such behavior stresses you?

boots9548> you higher rated players should encourage the lower ranked players

A higher-rated player has zero obligation to encourage lower-rated players. But many will if you ask nicely, and almost everyone will if you pay them enough.

boots9548 title> why do ALOT of superior players talk down to the less skilled?

I don't agree with your characterization of superior players. How many masters on here help fellow players, how many act politely, and how many act arrogantly?

Isnt this true in almost every human endeavor ?  What bothers me even more though is when someone under 1600 ( otb ) crushes me on the net and then proceeds to try and tell me where I went wrong...... fritz and other programs have made everyone a master it seems

People who are more skilled talk down to people who are less skilled...it's the same in every sport. If you are unable to deal with that I suggest you abandon competitive endeavours and take up pottery.

Sometimes people mistake "plain speaking" for "big ego" or "unfriendly" but if someone posts a suspect game here (as many do, proclaiming it to be a great game in which their opponent fell into mate when they were down 3 pieces), it seems better to tell them the truth to help them improve if they want to.

Oh god the "put into perspective" guys are so annoying yet there always seems to be at least one in every discussion...

So, are you saying that if a player rated lower than you points out your mistakes in a game, they must be using an engine?

Uhhh.....if that player is 600 points lower rated ......yeah , I would say the chances are very good that he/she is. It would be like me pointing out Kasparov's mistakes to him after smashing him online......what would he think you reckon ?  His otb rating about 600 points higher than mine.

Much_Afraid

Yea but Reb, reading your program paranoia posts in the past (holy alliteration) you do strike me as someone who would accuse anyone that beats you that is not a master, of using a program...

excalibur8

I've not encountered (yet) any player who has come across with a superior attitude even though they may be streets in front regards playing ability.
