Why do chess novices play a3/h3/a6/h6 when they don't really need to?

I play a6 often, mostly to prevent B/Kn b5 but also to support b5, possibly to allow Bb7 (sometimes useless on the d7 diagonal. Do I have too, am I a novice? Two matters of definition. As would be my general answer to the question. Why do weak players do weak moves...?

What do you consider novices and do you have a position or 2 to use as an example?
