Why do chess streamers say “takes, takes” when taking pieces?

This is improper English and as a new viewer I just find it to be a very weird part of chess culture.

They say takes when taking a piece!

It’s not correct English lol

It is shorthand understood by most players with a certain level of experience.

It only works where there is a minimal level of ambiguity.

If you say some piece takes another piece, I see nothing incorrect about it.

"Captures" contain two syllables.

"Takes" only contains one, and it's a simpler word to be understood by viewers, especially if these viewers are not very fluent in English or come from countries in which English is not widely spoken or written.

Vanish, destroy, demolish, wipe out, dissolve, clear away, escape etc.

They should say eats eats eats especially for the horse because it's a real character and if it was a lion then it would be soo nice

I think they're just trying to sort their moves out. 🙂♟️

It is shorthand for: white takes, black takes.
