e4-e5 is a doorway to many different respected attacks, all different from each over You should be asking why people play 2.Bf4??

Not everyone plays 1. e4 e5. When I'm White, I usually begin 1. d4 grin.png

It is just that most beginners are taught that 1. e4 is "best by test" (Fischer) or that 1. e4 is the most popular opening chess move statistically (also true, next most popular moves are 1. d4, 1. c4 and 1. Nf3).

If so many open with 1. e4 then just symmetrically playing 1...e5 is solid and therefore common (in fact, 1. d4 d5 is also very common and good).

I will also comment that you'll see more opening variety as you play more people at different ratings. Some openings are more common than others at certain levels (people stop falling for opening traps etc. so players have to adjust sometimes).

1. e4 e5 is probably super common for these reasons and because the moves appear simple, logical and are solid.

lol

It is all Levy's fault for recommending the London System d4, Bf4, Nf3 to beginners and advertising his course to success grin.png

To be fair, that opening system is solid for beginners to start with. It isn't an opening to really fear at the higher levels, but it is an okay opening. It is solid, but just not that ambitious.

p.s. when I first started chess, I played 1. e4 e5 with White and Black happy.png

You're right.  This year Carlsen played Ruy Lopez as black with poor results.  He should have listened to you.

I'm awash in an ocean of Sicilians trying to get me hooked into a land war in Asia.

I like how this guy puts everything he has to say in 5 posts instead of 1 lmao

Even when he had nothing to say. It's a new spam style.

1 e4 is the most logical opening and for the same reasons 1...e5 is the most logical answer.

1. e4 e5 is just the most solid approach by black. It can lead the game to the Spanish and Italian game, or some thing like the Danish gambit and the King's gambit. After all a really flexible move. But the higher you go, more people will start to play the Sicilian. But it is theory heavy so it is not popular at the lower level. However, I personally like the French defense the best.

And the London system is just really solid, which is why it is played a lot. I do play the London, but I always play either Jobava London or just some clumsy Ne2-f3 stuff instead of the normal Nf3.

When I was a kid, 1.e4 e5 was the opening everyone first learned. Nobody (in our chess club) learned anything different. All our games were e4 e5 games.

Different openings didn't really begin to appear until later on, when players started to branch out from curiosity/boredom.

Logic is often not the best way to figure out an answer.
