In bullet this is pretty annoying as I somehow only start with 15 - 25 seconds

You probably are experiencing a lot of lag .

Yeah, it may take a while to join a game sometimes, but usually it should be less than a second of lag. If it is more, you should abort the game before the first move, so you don't lose ELO
