Isn't 18,000 games enough practice ?

I'm just practicing practicing. Once I start practicing for real I'll make real progress.

Once you start practicing for real ?

So were the 18,000 games just a pre-practice warm-up ?

18,000 games...that's a lot of practice practice...time to get some real practice done

Why? What good will it do me in the afterlife? There's no chess in Heaven. A little board told me.

If you wish to avoid losing games to idiots, don't play idiots.

Knightly_News

That is some great feedback to pass onto the staff for Chess.com V3.

The Blitz game selection menu should be:

15 Minute

15 Minute (No idiots)

10 Minute

10 Minute (No idiots)

5 Minute

5 Minute (No idiots)

Are you sure you're actually playing good chess yourself and they're playing badly? I've often went away thinking I was winning the entire game and then he played a tactic out of nowhere. But then would see later houdini showing a far less clear state.

Otherwise, tactical considerations. There's nothing more annoying than when he did everything wrong and yet there's some exceptional tactical consequence that you didn't go through... this should be less of a problem in long games.

Also always play with increment. Playing without an increment is literally retarded, I have no idea why anyone would play without an increment (apart from to get a game fast).

Knightly_News

Please help my retarded self out - but doesn't an increment mean that a game can go on practically forever? Or do people still wind up timing out? Can't they stall with dumb moves? (Forgive me, I've played with an increment like once a long time ago and didn't grok the benefit).

I like the thrill of the timeout, since I have score my share of wins (and losses) that way.

How does let's say 3 minute with an increment compare to 5 minute w/o?

VibrantMoves

It's a draw with perfect play.

Thanks. I'll stick to 5 minute blitz. I like the terminus. I'd rather win or lose and move on.  3 min, at least at the ranks I try, feels like hack moves, recklessness and too many errors. 10 minutes feels too  long and I can't get as many games in. 5 minutes gives time for a couple of good pauses to think for a bit but not excessively.

You are complaining about dropping 150 points. Recently i dropped more than 300 and it was painful. I can't say i was overrated because i could keep those rating many games. Now i'm facing players who were 300 point below me not so long time ago and it's difficult to play against them. I need to do my best to beat them.

So, were all blitz ratings changed recently?

No, i just haven't slept enough for several days and lost many games.

Ask Conrad Holt. He was playing with a whopping 30 second per move delay and still lost on time. Take a look at the final position!

If a game lasts 60 moves, an increment of 1 second is equivalent to adding one minute to the clock. So, a 3 2 game is close to a 5 0 game.

And here's a link to a game between Aronian and Seirawan where you can clearly see the clock times. The world blitz championship used to be 5 0 time controls, but now, it's 3 2.

The first game was a really impressive technical display by Aronian against one of the best endgame players of the 1980s, and the second was a nice bit of positional play by Seirawan. They're pretty fun games to watch.

Today i lost about 200 elo points in blitz at Fide Arena Server. Players were not that strong at first glance, i have wins vs higher rated, but the good thing is that you can always check their fide profile and what i see? I see serious 1800-2000 fide rated over the board tournament players with low online blitz - Around 1700-1850, who punish almost every inaccuracy move out of opening.  Well at least i know i lost to better players than me. I can imagine here is probably close to same, but here are a lot of casual players who are actually not that strong.

AIM-AceMove

Well after couple of years of bullet and blitz i now know despite high risk of cheater , the real chess is in inc. For example 3+2 or 5+3. Yes you can still play very strong 3/0 game, but 3+2 is just different animal way stronger. Now that i go to OTB blitz tournament and almost all are with inc i started to use my real board playing online 5+3, much harder.

I agree, lower ranked players make riskier moves and sometimes risks have rewards!
