Why do more guys play chess than girls?

Odds are, you probably clicked on this post bc 1. You were attracted to click on the google imaged profile picture that I have chosen or 2. You find this post interesting.

I did both... Being a highschool chess player filled with hormones, its natural that I selected the profile picture, no need to elaborate. However, going to chess tournaments rather than football games, spending countless hours with a massive headache over a game rather than going to parties has made me slowly start to agree with the notion that, "chess is boring" that many of my peers have adopted. To be sure, there are moments of bliss when I find some amazing tatic or manage to pull off an attack , or win a game for that matter.

So my question is, why is chess considered to be so boring, especially to highschools? / why are parties and football games considered to be widely recognized fun times. And as an extension why don't more girls play chess? Is chess considered to be a masculine sport? At tournaments, the men to women ratio is 1000:1 on a "good" day, is there an explanation for this?

Just pondering life... Any thoughts or comments are appreciated!

Extroverts have low cortical arousal. Basically their brain is numb Laughing, so they get bored / depressed if left alone. To relax or have a good time they need people and noise around them. They need to be stimulated.

Introverts have higher cortical arousal, so they go to a football game and are overwhelmed with all the crap and get bored / depressed. They relax alone in the quiet.

Just one theory out there anyway.

What follows is just off the top of my head:

Why chess and other smart stuff is snubbed is an interesting question. I'd guess that kids can't handle many shades of grey. Things need to be black and white  In the good column you have naturally attractive things... things that in the past kept our species going like tall strong guys and shapely ladies. Pretty much all other interests are foreign. Not that there isn't a big variety of interests among kids, just that the limited thinking ability dumps everything else into the bad category.

As kids struggle in the primitive social environment, adult structured social groups give individuals a place to belong. The adults will put more time and energy into what makes the school the most money. In the USA this tends to be football or other sports.

So it turns out that the most socially comfortable area also boasts a collection of some of the most psychologically attractive individuals.

Our brains are different. Different strokes for different folks.

Leiph15: interesting theory, is there a link that you can send me too or any scientific data to back it up? It would be even more interesting if the data was reliable.

Why do girls go shopping more than guys? Why do girls like to play with dolls more than guys? As a former lego, matchbox car, football playing female, I have to argue that a great deal of the inequality is nurture as opposed to nature. I was brought up with a tomboy mother and two brothers, so naturally, my interests were geared toward stereotypically male activities. The one Barbie I got for my birthday was sold the next day. Now, am I any different from the other girly-girls? No! I just have different interests. I'm sure there are many girls out there who like to watch football and play chess.
