Why Do People Resign After First Move?

Noticed that a lot of people on this site resign if you have white and make the first move E4. Wonder why?

hoodoothere

Is E4 intimidating or just boring?

It might just be that they accept the challenge and then realize that they can’t play for whatever reason.

your recent games didn't ended like that but they might got abandoned after first move ?

Yeah, many were abandoned right after I made the first move E4 as white.

Happens too often to  be that....sometimes twice in a row with different people.

Could be lots of reasons.

They impulsively clicked new game then realized they need to quit.

Looked at your rating and wanted someone higher or lower

Looked at your profile and saw something fishy, like that 22 game win streak

They wanted to practice their strategy as black

etc etc

I think it is because they don't like the opening or don't know how to play it. As a chess player you are supposed to try to know as many openings as possible though.

Why ask a question if you're going to answer it yourself?

That is a possibility but 1.e4 is probably the first move in more than 80 percent of the games I play as black.  So a plan to abandon would  mean a lot of abandoning.  Maybe enough to get you banned.

But sometimes it is probably true that a person wants to practice against 1. d4 and will abandon  if he doesn't get that.

Jajakilroy

e4 is aggressive opening. it scares them when you show signs of manly talent!!! bet you if play a4 more often no one would ever abandon against you again! or the Amar opening! 😂 that one won't scare them away ether!!!

True, that is not correct. used at the end of a list to indicate that further, similar items are included. (copied and pasted from google search)

Yep. Etc is short for Etcetera basically meaning "and so on"

You can abort but I don't know if you can resign after one move.

Heritageoviya

Sometimes I do that too. Like I start a game and resign it after they move.

1) You played a lot of chess that day and you realized how tired you are and you don't want to play another game.

2) You found a certain opening you wanted to try out, but, for example, you need the white pieces and keep on getting black pieces when you start a game.

3) Just when you start a game you have to go somewhere or do something.

4) Your opponent is a really high or low rated player.

I think everyone does it once in while, but there must be lots who abuse it because it happens to me like every third game. Also, if you don't want to play someone too much higher or lower rated than yourself, there are custom settings for that.....just set to + or - 100 say.
